Paper accepted at ISM conference

PEEC is pleased to announce that a research paper has been accepted for publication at the International Conference on Industry 4.0 and Smart Manufacturing (ISM), where topics related to Industry 4.0 and smart manufacturing will be discussed.

The paper, titled "From Remote-Controlled Excavators to Digitized Construction Sites", discusses initial approaches to how an excavator can be controlled remotely via a PS4 controller and a smartphone. In a human centered design approach, requirements for such a scenario were first gathered by interviewing excavator operators. After a storyboard was developed and continuously refined with the excavator operators, a first prototype could be implemented. The paper (i) describes the scenario and the specific challenges it poses, (ii) presents the developed prototypes, and (iii) discusses the results of a user study conducted to assess practical applicability. This yielded initial insights into the usability of the prototype but also scenarios for possible further development. In the paper, possible scenarios were then derived from this, which scenarios could be better supported or even automated by digitization on a construction site.
